Lights Out is a grid of lights. Pressing any light toggles it and its four orthogonal neighbours, and your goal is to switch every light off. Every puzzle generated here is guaranteed solvable, and you can pick a 3×3, 4×4 or 5×5 grid — the smaller boards are a good place to learn the method before the 25-cell version.
The reliable technique is called chasing the lights. Work from the top row downward: look at which cells in row 1 are still lit, then press the cell directly beneath each one in row 2. Row 1 is now fixed, and only presses in row 3 can still change it — so you never touch row 1 again. Repeat row by row until the last row, then check it: if it is not clear, the required top-row presses follow a small lookup, and re-chasing from a different opening usually gets there in a couple of tries.
Order does not matter and pressing the same cell twice cancels out, so the puzzle is about picking the right set of cells once, not about speed.

Tips & Tricks
- 1Order doesn't matter — toggling the same light twice cancels out
- 2Work from the top row down: press below each lit cell in the row above
- 3Once a row is clear, never press in it again — only the row beneath can change it
- 4On a 5×5 board the last row decides everything; learn the four last-row patterns and clears become routine
- 5Start on 3×3 to internalise the chase, then move up — the method is identical, only longer
- 6A press affects at most five cells, so count how many lit cells a corner, edge and centre press each resolve
- 7Because presses commute, you can solve on paper first and then click the set in any order
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did more lights turn on?
Each press flips the clicked light plus its up, down, left and right neighbours — up to five cells at once.
Are all puzzles solvable?
Yes — each board is created by scrambling a solved board with valid moves, so a solution always exists.
Is it free?
Yes — plays instantly in your browser.
What grid sizes are available?
3×3, 4×4 and 5×5. The method is the same at every size.
What is the chasing method?
Clear the top row by pressing directly below each lit cell in the row underneath, then repeat down the board. Each cleared row is then locked.
Does the order of presses matter?
No. Presses commute, and pressing the same cell twice returns the board to where it was.
