Board Games and Card Games, Side by Side
The board games here are honest implementations without hidden assists. Chess is a local two-player match whose moves are validated against the real rules for each piece — but there is no automatic castling, so you walk the king to safety with ordinary king moves instead. Checkers crowns a king on the far row and otherwise restricts pieces to forward diagonal movement and jumps.
Four in a Row and Tic Tac Toe are the two games you can finish in a minute. Four in a Row is a 6-row by 7-column grid where discs fall to the lowest free slot and every placement is checked in all four directions at once, while Tic Tac Toe is a pure 3x3 board where the centre square sits on four of the eight winning lines. Both are same-device two-player games with no AI.
The card games carry the deepest rules. Hearts deals 13 cards to each of four players, passes three before play, and puts exactly 26 penalty points on the table — thirteen hearts plus the Queen of Spades at thirteen — which is also the shoot-the-moon threshold. Spades is the partnership version: you and your partner bid a combined contract with spades as permanent trumps, and overtricks accumulate as bags that cost you later.
Ludo closes the shelf with a race instead of a fight. Four tokens start in base, a six is needed to release one, and every token must complete the outer loop before turning into the home column — where the last step needs an exact roll. The four star squares are the only safe parking spots, which is why spreading tokens beats stacking them. Nothing here runs on a clock, so the shelf suits players who want to think rather than react.
FAQ
What are the best free strategy games online?
Chess and Checkers lead for deep board strategy, Four in a Row and Tic Tac Toe are the fast options, and Hearts, Spades, and Ludo cover trick-taking and board-race strategy — all free in the browser with no download.
Can I play chess online without downloading?
Yes. Our Chess game runs instantly in Chrome, Safari, or Edge with no account. Note that it is a local two-player board: you select a piece and click its destination square, and moves are validated against the real rules for each piece.
Is there a computer opponent?
It depends on the game. Hearts and Spades fill the other seats with AI opponents. Chess, Checkers, Four in a Row, and Tic Tac Toe are same-device two-player games, and Ludo supports both modes.
How should families assess age suitability?
Content and difficulty vary by title. Review the game description and controls before play; this site does not assign age ratings.
Do strategy games work offline?
After one online visit, install the PWA. Board and card games cache well for offline sessions on commutes or flights, and none of them needs a connection once loaded.
Is any strategy game timed?
No. Nothing on the strategy shelf runs on a clock, so you can think for as long as you like. Closing the tab loses the current board, but your saved statistics stay.
What is shooting the moon in Hearts?
Taking all 26 penalty points in a single round — thirteen hearts at one point each plus the Queen of Spades at thirteen. Instead of scoring 26, you add 26 to every opponent, which usually decides the match.
