Chess is the classic 8×8 strategy game played here as a local two-player board. Each side starts with 16 pieces — one king, one queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights and eight pawns — and White moves first.
Click one of your pieces to select it, then click a destination square. The board validates each move against the real movement rules for that piece: pawns advance one square (two from their starting rank) and capture on the forward diagonal, rooks travel along ranks and files, bishops along diagonals, queens do both, knights jump in an L, and the king steps one square in any direction. Sliding pieces are blocked by anything standing in the path, and no piece may land on a square occupied by its own colour.
What this version deliberately keeps simple: it enforces piece movement and captures, but it does not run check, checkmate or stalemate detection, and castling, en passant and pawn promotion are not implemented. Treat it as a rules-faithful board for practising openings and tactics with a second person sitting next to you — you call the game's result yourselves.
Controls
- Click one of your pieces - Select it
- Click a destination square - Move or capture
- Click a different piece of your colour - Change selection
- New Game button - Reset the board to the starting position
Tips & Tricks
- 1Fight for the centre four squares — d4, d5, e4 and e5 — in the first dozen moves
- 2Bring knights and bishops out before the queen; an early queen just gets chased and loses tempo
- 3Because there is no auto-castling here, tuck your king to safety with explicit king moves instead
- 4Since promotion is not implemented, do not build a plan that depends on queening a pawn
- 5Avoid moving the same piece twice in the opening unless it is forced — that hands your opponent free development
- 6Before every move, list which of your pieces are currently attacked and undefended
- 7A knight on the rim is dim: it controls roughly half the squares it would from the centre
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a computer opponent?
No. This is a local two-player board — you and another person take turns on the same device.
Does the game detect checkmate?
No. Move legality and captures are enforced, but check, checkmate and stalemate are not detected, so you decide when a game is over.
Can I castle?
No. Castling, en passant and pawn promotion are not implemented in this version.
Are illegal moves blocked?
Yes. A move is rejected if it does not match the piece's movement pattern, if the path is blocked, or if the target square holds your own piece.
Who moves first?
White always moves first, and turns alternate after every legal move.
Why can't my pawn move two squares?
The two-square advance is only allowed from its starting rank, and only when both the intermediate and destination squares are empty.
