This is a browser paddle game on a 600 by 400 court. You control the left paddle, an AI controls the right one, and the first side to five points takes the match.
Both paddles are 15 units wide and 80 units tall, and the ball is 12 units square. The ball leaves the centre with a horizontal speed of 5 and a random vertical component between −2.5 and 2.5, so the opening serve angle is never the same twice.
Every time a paddle strikes the ball, its horizontal speed is multiplied by 1.05. That compounding is the whole difficulty curve: by the eighth hit the ball is moving about 48% faster than it started, and rallies end because someone cannot reach the corner in time rather than because of a mistake.
The AI does not predict. Each frame it targets the ball's current height and closes at most 4.8 units toward it, while your paddle moves at 6 units per frame — you are measurably faster than it.
Controls
- Arrow Up — Move paddle up
- Arrow Down — Move paddle down
- Space — Serve or pause
- Restart — Play a new match
Tips & Tricks
- 1Meet the ball with the paddle centre for predictable, flat returns
- 2Hit with the paddle edge to add sharp angles
- 3Stay near centre when the ball is far — react outward on approach
- 4Watch the AI paddle; it lags slightly on fast reversals
- 5Your paddle covers 6 units per frame versus the AI's 4.8, so you can out-run it — but only if you start moving early
- 6Because speed compounds 5% per hit, long rallies favour whoever is more consistent, not whoever is flashier
- 7Off-centre hits are worth the risk late in a rally, since the AI's 4.8-unit cap means a steep angle it cannot close
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I win?
Score five points before the AI. Points count when the ball passes your opponent's paddle.
Does the ball really speed up?
Yes. Every paddle hit multiplies horizontal speed by 1.05, so after eight hits it is roughly 1.48 times the starting speed.
How does the AI decide where to move?
It simply tracks the ball's current vertical position, moving at most 4.8 units per frame. It does not predict bounces, which is why sudden reversals beat it.
Which keys work?
Arrow Up and Arrow Down move your paddle, and Space serves or pauses. There are no letter-key alternatives.
How big is the playing area?
600 by 400 units, with paddles 15 wide and 80 tall and a 12-unit ball.
Is the serve angle random?
Yes. The ball always leaves at horizontal speed 5, but the vertical component is random between −2.5 and 2.5, so no two serves are identical.
